Biography

Virginia Vargolska is a researcher and PhD fellow in the "Future Arctic" Marie Curie Innovative Training Network, where she is investigating how big data and machine learning are changing scientific practice in environmental and ecosystem research.
Her research background synthesizes various theoretical frameworks, from science and technology studies to social anthropology and philosophy, but is methodologically anchored in ethnography. She holds an MA degree in Sociocultural Anthropology from the Charles University in Prague, with a minor in Philosophy. Virginia's MA thesis was an ethnographic study of the emergence of a local cryptocurrency, and her research interests include the formation and production of knowledge, sociotechnical imaginaries, critical algorithm studies and automation.
