Biography

Robin Rae is a researcher at the Department for Science and Technology Studies (STS), University of Vienna. He is affiliated with the department since his STS specialization in his study of Sociology combined with Psychology and Educational sciences at the University of Vienna, which he graduated with a Magister thesis on the role of imaginations about internet in online information-seeking practices in online-shopping scenarios. Through partaking in a Postgraduate program funded by the federal ministry for science and research at the Center for Social Innovation, Vienna, he further deepened his research interest and motivation for a PhD.

Robin’s enrolment in the PhD program at the STS department was accompanied with the postgraduate program ‘Sociology of social practices’ and stipend at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS), Vienna. During his comparative PhD Robin spent a month as visiting scholar at the Science and Justice Research Center (SJRC), University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC), and conducted ethnographic field work in various mountainous places in the USA and Austria. Currently, Robin is part of the Social Sciences and Humanities research team in the H2020 project Smart4Health.

Current Research Interests

Since his first encounter with STS, Robin’s main research interest has been located at the broad intersection of users and technology, particularly how technologies affect everyday life, how they are culturally embedded, and become entangled and experienced with bodies – through being in movement and moved affectively. In his comparative PhD thesis Robin investigates how the change of technological standards in outdoor sports like mountain biking are valued and made sense of in material-discursive practices. He thereby explores how the relation of human-technology-environment is collectively re-negotiated at multiple sites, and thus how this assemblage is valued in and through movement.
