Biography

Susanne Oechsner is a researcher and lecturer at the Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS), University of Vienna. She holds a Magister diploma in Cultural and Social Anthropology from the University of Vienna and graduated with a thesis on the relevance of intersectional categories of difference for women’s access to women’s shelters. Susanne has extensive experience in qualitative research methods (ethnographic methods, qualitative interviewing, group discussions), which she deeply enjoys teaching. Susanne worked as a researcher in the project RFID & Society (2014-2017), investigating the ethical and societal challenges of implementing localization systems of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technologies for intelligent process control. Currently she is part of the project team involved in BBMRI.at, investigating the ethical, legal and social issues in biobanking.

Current Research Interests

Susanne's main research interests are located at the intersection of the production of technology and society, with a special focus on sensing technologies, datafication and the aging society. In her PhD-thesis she investigates the politics of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) technologies and empirically follows how the collective good for aging societies and the persona of the user are being negotiated and assembled in different sites and practices of technology production.
