Citizen Science

Open discussion with citizen science practitioners from Austria.

Session on 05.05.2022, 15:00-17:30 (online) with: Tobias Reckling; Daniel Derler & Florian Heigl; Michael Strähle & Christine Urban

The first discussion is with Tobias Reckling, the team manager of the unit “National Funding & Knowledge Exchange”. He supports citizen science projects by managing the website and helps practitioners to apply for funds and manage their projects.
Then we will talk to Daniel Derler and Florian Heigl. They both work at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna - Institute of Zoology, Department of Integrative Biology and Biodiversity Research. Currently they are running a citizen science project, which aims to document animals from road accidents and understand their conditions better. Additionally, Daniel is the coordination of the national citizen science platform Österreich forscht (, and they both are doing research on citizen science focusing on quality criteria for citizen science projects.
In the second part, we will have Michael Strähle of Wissenschaftsladen Wien - Science Shop Vienna with his colleague Christine Urban. They’re involved in an ongoing H2020 project "CS Track". In this project they tackle several issues that citizen science is haunted with, such as issues of conceptualisations of citizen science, issues of participation and intricacies coming along with activities in citizen science.
