The birth of scientific anti-racism
Jenny Reardon, UC Santa Cruz
Abstract
Why after the failure of scientific professional societies does UNESCO seek and succeed to write an Expert Statement on Race? Why does it then publish a second statement in 1951? Why do German scientists who conceived and implemented Nazi racial hygiene policies serve as 'experts' who draft and comment on this second UNESCO statement? To answer these puzzling-and troubling-questions, The Birth of Scientific Anti-Racism brings into view the politics and epistemics of writing of 'expert' statements on race, and the forms of scientific anti-racisms they help to realize.
