Vienna STS Talks x Panel discussion by Panel discussion 'Alternative knowledge practices and the politics of urban transformation'

About the panel

The panel discussion will address the theme of a special issue that will be published in the journal ‘Environment and Planning C - Politics and Space’. It examines the dynamics of alternative urban knowledge practices that extend sense-making beyond established ways of understanding the city and entrenched certainties, and thus contribute to the politics of urban transformation. We focus on urban frictions—the tension-filled, fragmented dynamics of urban life where diverse knowledges collide, interact, and sometimes resist one another. The contributions explore how alternative urban knowledge emerges in resistance movements, informal practices, and marginalized perspectives in a range of contexts—including for example strategies of homeless communities in Chennai, urban space-making practices of children in Chile, informal learning in Urban Living Lab initiatives in Maastricht, and the enactment of counter-expertise in self-organised housing groups in Vienna. We will discuss how knowledge is produced, contested, and co-opted in cities, and how this in turn contributes to the development and transformation of urban spaces.
